Sharon Irish said a University of Illinois student referendum in February 2026 had approved a non‑binding statement in support by about 87% of those who voted.
Speakers urged practical support beyond study: commitments of budget and procedural support to staff and the commission so it can meet, conduct research and produce implementable recommendations. Several pledged to help identify commission members and to work collaboratively across municipalities and the county.
Next steps: Speakers said they will seek council support and cooperation with Champaign County and will attend future public meetings; councilors heard the comments during the budget/public‑input portion of the committee meeting and did not take formal action on the topic during that session.
