At the June 1 meeting, Select Board members S. Miller and E. Best reported back from an employment-law seminar hosted by Drummond Woodsum. S. Miller summarized several points the Board discussed: a requirement that all employees receive sexual-harassment training (and Drummond Woodsum’s recommendation that such training be conducted annually), guidance on separating employees’ First Amendment rights from restrictions on speaking on behalf of the Town, pay-rate calculations, new extended-leave laws, and termination procedures.
Board members discussed how to make sure stipend employees have their Earned Paid Leave accurately calculated. Fire Chief J. Chapman, who joined remotely, described the Fire Department’s annual sexual-harassment and discrimination training for firefighters and recommended that the Town review training materials and offerings from the Maine Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Standards), particularly for Public Works staff and personnel at the Blue Hill/Surry Transfer Station.
The Board did not adopt new policy at the meeting but identified areas for administrative follow-up and review of training resources.
