Joshua Barton sworn in; council elects Council Member Terelli as vice mayor

Joshua Barton was sworn in as a member of the Statham City Council during the Jan. 6, 2026 public hearing and work session. Barton repeated the oath of office and concluded, “So help me God.”
The council then held an internal election for vice mayor. The vote resulted in one vote for Council Member Patterson and four votes for Council Member Terelli; Council Member Terelli was declared vice mayor for a two-year term.
The oath and election were conducted early in the meeting as routine organizational business. The council also approved the minutes from its Dec. 16, 2025 meeting after discussing whether the newly sworn member should abstain; staff advised abstention is required only when a member has a vested interest in the matter.
The meeting proceeded to department reports and agenda items before the council recessed into an executive session on real estate later in the evening.
