Middletown council elects Jake Smith president, approves sewer-repair reimbursement and schedules settlement session

Jake Smith, one of three newly elected council members sworn in at the meeting, was chosen as Town Council President during the Middletown Town Council’s Jan. 5 session.
The reorganization came after Council Member Dave Wagner nominated Smith and Donita Chambless seconded; the council elected Smith by voice vote. Clerk-Treasurer Drew Cooper had administered oaths of office to newly elected members Donita Chambless, Gary Kendall and Jake Smith at the start of the meeting.
The vote was one of several actions the council took on matters tied to recent local infrastructure work. The council scheduled an executive session for Friday, Jan. 8 at 5:00 p.m. to discuss strategy on settling with 3‑D Company over the final payment on the 5th Street Stormsewer Project, following a recommendation from Town Attorney Joel Harvey.
The council also voted to reimburse a resident for sewer repairs the body concluded were most likely caused by the stormsewer project. Council Member Dave Wagner moved to authorize the Clerk-Treasurer to reimburse Barbara Hornback of 419 N. 5th Street for 50 percent of a $4,648.00 invoice she paid to Roto-Rooter for repairs to her sewer lines; Donita Chambless seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Separately, Matt Spidel of Butler-Fairman-Seufert reported that financing has been obtained for the Water Treatment Plant Replacement Project and that construction will start soon.
With no further business, the council adjourned the Jan. 5 meeting.
