Health staff report local colposcopy capability, HPV vaccine emphasis and QI metrics

At the May 12 meeting the Oneida County health department reported that staff training and quality-tracking are improving local clinical services and program performance.
Linda Jerzak said she completed a five-day training in Florida on Pap tests and colposcopy procedures, explaining that colposcopy uses a microscope to examine the cervix and identify abnormal areas for biopsy. Jerzak and Linda Conlon said offering colposcopy locally should improve continuity of care for patients who previously did not follow up when referred elsewhere. Jerzak emphasized the importance of HPV vaccines, saying that children vaccinated before age 15 need two doses while older individuals require three doses; she noted Australia’s progress toward eliminating cervical cancer and stated cervical cancer causes more than half a million deaths worldwide.
Kyla Waksmonski, the Accreditation Coordinator and QI/PM lead, reported that the department tracks about 35 performance metrics. Waksmonski said approximately 44% of targets were met or exceeded in 2025 while 56% were approaching targets; Conlon added that data collection frequency matters for timely improvement and that the department monitors performance quarterly.
