Dunn County libraries report major usage, Colfax director remembered

Directors of Dunn County public libraries reported 2025 usage figures and programs at the June 17 board meeting and highlighted the broader community roles libraries play.

Jolene Sterk, director of the Menomonie Public Library, and Shelly Ray of the Sand Creek Public Library described circulation, in‑person visits, computer and Wi‑Fi use, and outreach initiatives such as mobile career-lab visits and voter-registration assistance. Sterk emphasized libraries’ role as public, no‑fee community hubs that provide internet access, job-search help, and social‑service referrals.

Colfax Public Library staff presented usage statistics for a community of roughly 1,200 residents, reporting nearly 28,000 checkouts, strong program attendance and more than 3,900 wireless sessions for the year. Presenters highlighted local initiatives including a Little Free Pantry and mobile services that brought job and healthcare navigation to less-mobile residents.

The board also observed a moment of silence for Colfax library director Lisa Marie Brechtl, who died unexpectedly in late May. The record included a statement with biographical details and an announcement that a celebration of life was scheduled for July 11 at the Colfax Fairgrounds.

No funding changes were approved during the library presentations; directors asked supervisors to consider the reimbursement options available under state statute and the role of county funding in offsetting library service costs to county residents.
