Iron County declares local drought emergency and authorizes mutual-aid response

The Iron County Commission voted unanimously on June 8 to declare a local drought emergency and heightened wildfire risk, enabling county officials to request state and federal assistance and activate emergency drought-response measures.

George Colson, Iron County Emergency Management Manager, told the commission that the proclamation would allow him to facilitate mutual aid, emergency water supplies, and other support for residents and livestock. The proclamation cites Governor Executive Order 2026‑02 and the U.S. Drought Monitor’s assessments that statewide snowpack and water forecasts were substantially below normal. The declaration runs for 90 days unless extended by further commission action.

Section 3 of the proclamation makes explicit that the declaration authorizes Iron County’s emergency manager and appropriate officials to coordinate with state and federal agencies, request mutual aid, establish emergency water services, deploy equipment and personnel for wildfire preparedness, provide water‑conservation information, and conduct damage assessments for disaster assistance applications. The commission approved the proclamation by voice vote with Commissioners Michael Bleak, Paul Cozzens and Chair Kenneth Robinson voting aye.

The declaration does not itself appropriate county funds; it authorizes emergency actions and positions the county to request external assistance for drought response and wildfire mitigation. The county will follow state and federal guidance for damage documentation, resource requests and any mutual‑aid arrangements.
