West Oso honors perfect‑attendance students and awards ‘Shoot Hoops Not Guns’ scholarships

The West Oso ISD board recognized Caitlyn Cantu and Jakari Smith, members of the Class of 2026, for perfect attendance and praised their perseverance and daily commitment to school.
The board also acknowledged the Landry/Taylor family and the Shoot Hoops Not Guns tournament, created in memorial to former West Oso student-athlete Devin King, which has provided community fundraising and athletics support for several years. Bonnie Landry described a multi‑year effort that originally provided shoes for athletes and has grown into a tournament that returns proceeds to the West Oso basketball program. Board staff said the tournament proceeds this year enabled awarding scholarships to seniors.
This year’s named scholarship recipients present at the meeting were Olivia Shaw, Kevette Hudgins, Veronica Garcia and Cangelo Richardson; the program awarded scholarships to four of five seniors in the program (one chose workforce entry rather than college). Administrators said scholarship payments of $500 each are contingent on documentation of college enrollment or registration; staff will present checks after students provide enrollment verification.
Board members and staff commended the family and volunteers for organizing the event and supporting student-athletes across ages. No formal board vote was associated with the recognitions beyond the meeting’s usual ceremonial items.
