Perry Council approves three grant-funded downtown security cameras

The Perry City Council voted unanimously Nov. 18 to install three downtown security cameras, using equipment funded through a Georgia Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction grant awarded in 2023.
Police Chief Everage told council the grant covered camera equipment and that the remaining municipal costs are minimal. He said the cameras are intended to provide deterrence and investigative footage for incidents such as hit-and-runs and other downtown crimes. Proposed locations include the Jernigan/Carol corner (covering the 700 block), Ball/Carol (800 block) and Main/Ball (covering city hall back parking and the Main Street corridor). He noted tree cover limits coverage on the 900 block.
Chief Everage described solar-power options explored in 2023 but said panels proved large and visually intrusive for some passive parks; the city instead prioritized sites with available power. Council approved the camera installations by voice vote with no opposition.
Next steps: staff will schedule installation and coordinate placement with downtown stakeholders. The equipment was paid for via the earlier grant; the transcript records no additional budget appropriation needed for the cameras themselves.
