At its June 18 meeting, the Lincoln Way Community High School District 210 Board of Education unanimously approved a public utility easement allowing the Village of New Lennox to install a force main and gravity conveyance that will run along the eastern and southern edges of the Lincoln Way West campus.
Mike (district operations staff) told the board the village's multi-phase water treatment project requires the route because other utility easements prevent an alternate alignment. He said the easement is "100% no cost to us" and includes a temporary construction easement and a permanent easement for the buried pipeline, and that the village has agreed to restore affected areas to conditions "equal to or better than" those now on the site.
Chuck (district operations staff) answered technical questions about the campus impacts, saying the project could require removal of trees, disruption of batting cages and work across practice fields. Staff said the agreement includes language requiring the village to restore trees and facilities and to coordinate timing so athletic fields and programs are not unduly disrupted; staff noted a target schedule that would begin major on-campus work after the end of the softball/baseball season and have campus work completed in time for spring athletics.
Board members pressed staff on specifics including the depth and width of the trench, proximity to an existing natural gas line and whether restored structures would be protected from future repairs. Staff said the village will perform grading and restoration and that the district will walk the site with the village's engineers to finalize replacement specifications (for example, if a 50-foot tree is removed, the village may replace with multiple new trees to meet the district's standard).
The district noted the village expects on-campus construction that affects district property to last about three to six months and that most heavy work on the Lincoln Way West property would occur in summer 2027. District staff also said they will coordinate with the village on daily operations so that disruptions to utilities, electric service or school programs are minimized.
The board moved, seconded and voted to approve the Village of New Lennox public utility easement agreement as presented; the vote was unanimous.
