Mayville police, fire and EMS report steady call volumes; fire rescue squad failed DOT inspection

At the June 22 Public Safety Committee meeting, departmental representatives summarized recent activity across police, fire and EMS.
The Police Department representative reported 392 calls since the prior meeting for 2,369 year-to-date and said a newly hired officer is in field training and expected to be on the road in late August. The presenter noted enforcement of local nuisance ordinances (junk vehicles, abandoned yards) and described deployments for the Fourth of July Rock and Boom event.
The Fire Department representative reported five new calls since the last meeting (bringing the 2026 total to 52), two mutual-aid responses, weather-related deployments and outreach efforts including station tours and school events. The speaker said all apparatus underwent annual DOT and PM inspections but that "our rescue squad failed its DOT inspection" and that the issue (frame separation and rust) will be discussed as part of the capital improvement plan with follow-up inspections and repairs planned.
The EMS representative reported 709 year-to-date calls (183 more than last year), a 100% pass rate for the recent EMT class on the National Registry exam, plans to run dual EMT/AEMT cohorts in the fall, and hiring activity for a new AEMT candidate.
Committee members asked follow-up questions about the failed DOT inspection and were told the rescue squad will be kept within city limits pending further evaluation and that updates will return to city hall as part of capital-planning discussions.
