Perry police ask DOT to study lowering Commerce Street speed to 30 mph; council moves Elco Road change to next meeting

Perry — The Perry chief of police on Wednesday asked the city to seek a state Department of Transportation study to lower the speed limit on Commerce Street (State Route 7) from 45 mph to 30 mph through the downtown corridor to address growing pedestrian activity.
“With the planned extension of Jernigan Street and continued growth of pedestrian traffic, I would like to ask the mayor and council to submit a formal request to DOT for a study to reduce that speed limit to 30 miles an hour,” Chief Everage told council.
Chief Everage also discussed Elco Road, a city street where a recent speed study showed average travel speeds around 46–47 mph. He said the city can change the posted limit on Elco Road without a DOT study and that staff would present the required ordinance/vote at the council’s next regular meeting.
Council members expressed general agreement with the safety rationale and gave concurrence for the DOT request; they directed staff to move the Elco Road item forward for a formal vote. No formal ordinance was adopted at Wednesday’s work session.
