Cushing selectmen reject motion to sell harbormaster boat

The Cushing Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 on August 11 against a motion to sell the town’s harbormaster boat, motor and trailer.
Chairman Alton Grover moved, seconded by Selectman Robert Worthing, "to sell the Harbormaster boat, motor, and trailer." Grover and Worthing voted for the motion; Selectmen Laurie Haynes, Martha Marchut and Daniel Staples voted against it, and the motion failed.
The debate centered on whether the unused boat should be retained for harbor use or sold before it lost value. Selectman Daniel Staples volunteered to move the boat to his home and cover it with a tarp, and he noted advice from the Maine Municipal Association that the harbormaster should use the boat the town owns. Selectman Robert Worthing said he felt the Maine Municipal Association did not provide an objective point of view.
Because the sale motion failed, the board recorded that Staples will relocate the boat to his property for storage and cover it.
The meeting began at 6:00 p.m. at the Cushing Community Center and adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
