Cushing Selectmen authorize tree removal, approve ballfield shed repairs and accept gym booking

At the Oct. 13 meeting Selectmen authorized removal of a town-owned roadside tree over a resident’s objection citing insurance liability, approved lifting the ball field shed onto skids, accepted a gym request for Nov. 15, and discussed committee openings and a Transfer Station meeting with MRC.
The Town of Cushing Selectmen on Oct. 13 authorized several maintenance and scheduling actions, including the removal of a roadside tree the chair said posed a liability risk and a planned repair to the ball field shed.
Chair Alton Grover said he arranged for removal of a town-owned tree on Stones Point Road that was leaning toward the roadway near Ms. Garrison’s property. Ms. Garrison objected and asked that the tree be left standing because of blueberries on the site; Grover said the town’s insurance carrier would want the tree removed and that the town could be liable if it fell. Grover gave permission for the tree’s removal as recorded in the minutes.
Selectmen also addressed a sinking storage shed at the town ball field. Grover said the shed had been built on the ground and was rotting; Selectman Daniel Staples proposed lifting the shed and placing skids underneath it, and a Recreation Committee member had asked that the shed be moved closer to the concession stand. The board voted to try putting skids under the shed before winter (motion by Staples, seconded by Haynes; recorded in the minutes as carried).
On facility scheduling, the Selectmen accepted a request from Tammy Brooks to use the Community Center gym from 7:30–8:30 a.m. on Nov. 15. Town Clerk Lisa Young raised whether openings on the Assessment Review Board should be listed and asked if the Ordinance Committee should include more than three members; Selectmen said they would follow up at the next meeting and that two additional members for the Ordinance Committee were desired by at least two selectmen.
Selectman Martha Marchut reported that a representative from MRC would attend the next Transfer Station Committee meeting on Nov. 13 to discuss future plans with Waldoboro. The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
