Starmont board approves daycare lease tweak, sharing agreements and three hires at special meeting

The Starmont Community School District Board approved a series of personnel, facilities and sharing-agreement actions at a special meeting Tuesday, July 30, in the Starmont High School Conference Room. President Tony Recker called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.; a quorum of board members was present.
The board unanimously approved the consent agenda, then approved a revised lease for a daycare tenant after removing a clause that would have required the tenant to reimburse the district for utilities. The motion to approve the lease amendment was made by board member Jason Gearhart and seconded by Jacob Moellers; the board voted 5-0 in favor.
The board also approved use of the district softball field by the junior high travel softball team. Board member Julie Uhlenkamp moved the field-use approval; Jason Gearhart seconded and the motion carried 5-0.
On staffing and inter-district arrangements, Jacob Moellers moved to approve a 60/40 sharing agreement with West Central CSD for a School Business Official at a proposed salary of $85,000, with discussion following. Board member Vicki Althoff then moved to amend the motion to set the salary at $80,000; Julie Uhlenkamp seconded the amendment. The amendment passed 5-0 and the amended sharing agreement (60/40 at $80,000) carried 5-0.
A separate vote on the sharing agreement for the Human Resource Director produced two motions. Moellers initially moved to increase the sharing split from 70/30 to 60/40 with a salary of $52,500, but that motion received no second and therefore died. Uhlenkamp then moved to approve increasing the sharing ratio from 70/30 to 60/40 with no salary change; Althoff seconded. That motion passed 4-0 with Jason Gearhart recorded as abstaining.
The board approved the employment of three personnel as presented — Emma McRobie-Bishop as a secondary teacher, Katie Taylor as School Business Official, and Carmen Swales as Human Resource Director — on a 5-0 vote after a motion by Jason Gearhart and second by Vicki Althoff.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to adjourn at 7:19 p.m. by motion of Vicki Althoff and second by Jason Gearhart.
