The Greater Burrows Advisory Board voted June 24 to place roughly $36,000 in an "other public health staff" line for FY27 as a temporary measure while members consider staffing and contracting options.
Mikaela (shared staff) presented the budget context, saying the $36,000 was tied to the ClearPath contract and could be moved: "If we didn't keep ClearPath, this first option would have been possible. But now it's, with ClearPath, we have this $36,000 to move," she said. Board members discussed three primary options: try again to hire a part‑time nurse for a year (members noted recruitment has been difficult), contract for a community outreach/education role, or temporarily place the funds in 'other public health staff' and revisit specifics in July.
Chair Isabella Crusoe moved to "accept the third column, and putting that $36,000 ... in other public health staff until July where we decide the specifics." A board member seconded the motion. The roll call that followed recorded affirmative votes from the towns present and the motion carried.
Members explained practical considerations: a permanent health-educator position would require a job description, personnel-board review and town-meeting approval; an alternative is a renewable contract describing the deliverables without changing municipal job classifications. Board members also discussed combining roles (inspector plus educator) and training outreach staff as CPR instructors where appropriate.
On FY26 housekeeping, Mikaela said about 94% of the FY26 budget has been spent and that ordered supplies (ticket materials, sunscreen dispensers, first-aid kits and hand sanitizer) will be distributed in the coming weeks. The board scheduled a July 9 meeting at 10 a.m. to finalize FY27 decisions.
Outcome: motion carried; funds placed in 'other public health staff' as a placeholder pending final decision at the July 9 meeting.
