Kermit planners weigh adding temporary worker housing category to zoning code
Summary
At its June 22 meeting, the Kermit Planning and Zoning Commission discussed adding a distinct category for temporary worker or 'man camp' housing and where such uses should sit in the code (multifamily/R3 versus commercial C3); commissioners asked staff for clarifying language before next review.

The Kermit Planning and Zoning Commission at its June 22 meeting opened a review of zoning‑code language and considered adding a specific classification for temporary worker housing often described in the meeting as "man camp" uses. Commissioners said the current matrix lacks an obvious placement for short‑term boarding or workforce housing and asked staff to draft options for where such uses should be allowed.
"There's nothing in here for man," one commissioner said when scanning the matrix and suggested the use might be placed with multifamily (R3) or given a new, explicit category. Staff responded that some of the uses now fall under high‑density multifamily or C3 commercial but that the commission could create a defined entry to avoid ambiguity.
Commissioners discussed the practical consequences: whether an RV or manufactured home used as a residence should be allowed in single‑family R1, or limited to manufactured‑housing zones; staff reminded the commission that, under the code as discussed, living in an RV is permitted only in manufactured‑housing designations, not in R1.
The commission did not adopt any code language at the meeting and asked staff to return with drafted text and clarifications on permitted uses and placement. The item was left for future consideration as part of the commission's broader zoning‑code update work.
