Steamboat Rock council hears water and sewer updates, approves hire and discusses rate increase

City staff told the Steamboat Rock City Council on Oct. 13 that E. coli test numbers are decreasing and that samples are being submitted on schedule. Public Works reported it is investigating a pump to improve circulation at the sewage treatment plant and is seeking the most cost-effective option.
Council approved the hire of Brandon Dilley for the water/sewer department. Kevin Pieters moved to approve the hire on the condition that Dilley carry general liability insurance; Cory Schurman seconded and the motion was approved. The council discussed whether to implement a water/sewer surcharge or to apply the annual increase established in the municipal code book, with members indicating a preference to follow the codebook increase.
Members also reviewed past-due water accounts; the mayor and the city clerk reported several repayment agreements are in place and that notices are being sent. Discussion of a sewer maintenance contract was postponed to the November agenda for further review.
