The Starmont Community School District Board unanimously approved a $25,000 wind/hail deductible buyback for the district’s commercial property insurance during a special teleconference on July 1, Board President Tony Recker said.
The action came at a brief meeting called to order at 7:15 a.m. in the superintendent’s office at Starmont High School. Recker read a statement explaining that in-person attendance was impractical and that the meeting would be held by electronic means pursuant to Section 21.8 of the Iowa Code. Roll call showed board members Vicki Althoff, Tony Recker, Julie Uhlenkamp, Jacob Moellers and Jason Gearhart present, with Superintendent Robert Busch and Business Manager/Board Secretary Katie Taylor in attendance. Pam Vaske of Smith Insurance participated by phone.
Trustee Julie Uhlenkamp moved to approve the agenda 'as presented,' and Trustee Vicki Althoff seconded. The motion carried on a 5-0 vote. Later, Trustee Jason Gearhart moved to approve the $25,000 wind/hail deductible buyback under an EMC Insurance proposal; Althoff seconded and the board approved the purchase 5-0. The board then voted 5-0 to adjourn at 7:24 a.m.
The meeting record does not include additional discussion of cost-benefit analysis, alternative coverage options, or implementation steps beyond the motion to buy back the deductible. No public comment was recorded. The board took three formal actions: approving the agenda, approving the EMC Insurance deductible buyback, and adjourning. Fiscal responsibility for the deductible buyback will be reflected in the district’s insurance expenditures and budget documents as appropriate.
