Stanhope council approves consent agenda, hears updates on nuisance abatement and police hiring

The Stanhope City Council met June 10 and approved its consent agenda, heard updates on nuisance and law-enforcement matters, and set follow-up steps on an intergovernmental agreement.
On a motion by Kempton Young with a second from Jill Haman, the council approved the consent agenda — including the June 10 agenda, May 13 minutes, payment of claims and the May financial reports — on a 4-0 roll call (one member absent).
Mayor Kelly Wirtz told the council a municipal infraction has been filed regarding a nuisance at 400–410 Parker and that no progress has been made on abatement. In public comment, patron Paul Block thanked the city for locating the water curb stops at the apartments at 700 School Street; Mayor Wirtz said the apartment owners are responsible for replacing the concrete parking and that Mr. Block will relay that to the apartment board.
Regarding a proposed 28E agreement with the Hamilton County Sheriff, Mayor Wirtz said the city has not received a copy of the agreement from county supervisors or the sheriff’s office. Without documentation the council agreed to table consideration and Mayor Wirtz said she will invite county supervisors and the sheriff to the next council meeting; the minutes note no payment will be made at this time.
Officer Morton reported that an unlicensed vehicle on Adams Street has been addressed and is now licensed. The council also heard that the Police Board is advertising for a new patrolman; that recruitment advertisement has a July 14, 2025, application deadline. Council Member Jill Haman asked staff to prepare a maintenance checklist ahead of Watermelon Day and Officer Morton reminded the council that no parking is allowed on Adams Street during the parade and that signs will need to be posted.
The council was told MIDAS will send an ordinance book to the city clerk so council members can begin reviewing and codifying ordinances. The meeting adjourned at 7:19 p.m. after a motion from Haman and a second from Mindy Hetland.
