Canton Township adopts proclamation recognizing monarch butterfly decline

The Canton Township Board of Trustees adopted a proclamation to raise awareness of monarch butterfly decline and affirmed support for conservation actions such as planting native milkweed, protecting pollinator habitat and encouraging schools and community organizations to participate in habitat restoration.
Supervisor Ann Marie Graham Hudak read the proclamation noting monarch migration and population declines due to habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change and deforestation. Trustees and the Canton Nature Society described ongoing plantings and mulching improvements in township gardens, and staff noted natural occurrences of swamp milkweed at Heritage Park.
Trustees said the proclamation will be shared with local schools and with the mayor's monarch pledge program. The board framed the measure as an educational, nonbinding conservation statement to encourage volunteer involvement during National Pollinator Week.
