Avon Sustainability Commission approves minutes, hears updates on outreach, EV charging and Energize CT

The Avon Sustainability Commission convened June 17 in the Avon Room and approved the minutes of its April 15, 2026 meeting. Chairperson Carrie Firestone moved to approve the minutes; Alex Kawa seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Members heard a series of brief updates from commissioners and staff. Commissioners Alex Kawa and Hayley Yaros reported staffing the commission’s table at the Simsbury Sustainability Fair in May, where a Hartford hydroponic farm partnered on a seed-planting activity for children. Commissioner Michael Dawson reported progress on completing the final link of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail through Plainville and highlighted Eversource rebate programs for appliances, suggesting the commission remind residents via Facebook to consult Energize CT when purchasing major appliances.
Chairperson Firestone updated members on PACE’s statewide geomapping of solar installations and its efforts to network environmental groups. Commissioner Michael Guerrera highlighted a student innovation—a biodegradable bottle cap made from knotweed—brought to the commission’s attention. Commissioner Hayley Yaros proposed exploring a town-wide tag sale this fall; members agreed to add that item to the July agenda and asked Yaros to gather examples of how other towns organize such events.
Staff member Grace Tiezzi reported on the Energize CT Home Energy Solutions mailer (see separate article) and provided a brief update on the town’s EV charging station project, both items the commission plans to track for outreach and resident engagement.
With no new business, Chairperson Firestone moved to adjourn at 8:25 p.m.; Michael Guerrera seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The commission scheduled follow-up discussion on the tag-sale proposal and upcoming event staffing at its next meeting.
