Stanton Community School District board endorses at-risk construction management and adopts county hazard mitigation plan

At a Nov. 12 regular meeting in the STEM Room, the Stanton Community School District Board of Directors endorsed a construction management-at-risk approach for upcoming projects after a presentation by representatives from KPE, unanimously adopted the Montgomery County Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, approved personnel actions and several policy updates, and set two virtual make-up days for weather-related closures.

KPE representatives briefed the board on three delivery methods—traditional contractor-led work, construction manager at risk (CMAR), and construction management as agent with no risk—outlining the pros and cons of each method. After discussion, the board reached a consensus to proceed with the at-risk construction management method for forthcoming projects.

The board took several formal actions by voice vote. Director Cameron Lewellen moved to approve an amended agenda removing item “D,” seconded by Zach Ward; the motion passed with all present voting in favor. A consent agenda motion by Ward, seconded by Travis Taylor, approved minutes, reports, bills and personnel items. Personnel actions approved under the consent agenda included hiring Mike Dukes as a van route driver, accepting the resignation of assistant volleyball coach Jody Druivenga, and approving Kaitlin Bates as a classroom volunteer.

Superintendent David Gute reported that the district recently completed a required radon test and led discussion on virtual make-up days for weather-related closures; the board reached a consensus to allow two virtual learning make-up days for the time being. Principal Katie Elwood distributed an update on PTSO, Booster Club and student activities; the board approved fundraisers including a Student Council hat day, a Beef Council take-and-bake meal fundraiser, and a January 'Pink Out Night' hosted by FCCLA.

Under new business the board approved an early graduation request for Clay Culver pending fulfillment of requirements (motion by Lewellen, second by Taylor). The board also voted to cast its vote for John Gambs for Green Hills AEA Director, District 2 (motion by Ward, second by Hoyt). Director Zach Ward moved, and Cameron Lewellen seconded, adoption of the Montgomery County Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan on behalf of the district; the resolution was approved on a unanimous voice vote. Superintendent Gute presented policy 402.3 for first reading and the board approved policies 208, 208R1, 208.1E1, 401.1, 502.7, 507.5 and 710.1E1 (motion by Ward, second by Lewellen).

President John McDonald adjourned the meeting at 7:05 p.m. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Dec. 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the STEM Room.
