The Davenport Parks Advisory Board discussed plans for its annual July park tour and signaled a preference to concentrate on Main Street Landing with one or two aquatic facilities and Northwest Park as primary stops.
Interim parks director Becca Niles outlined a proposed itinerary that would substitute a large van for the trolley, visit Main Street Landing, the FedEary Aquatic Center, Northwest Park and a drive-by of Credit Island and Green Acres if time permits. "I've invited the project managers to come and be able to speak about the project, where we're at with it, answer any questions," Niles said.
Board members urged spending significant time at Main Street Landing to see project progress and hear from multiple stakeholders; one member recommended 45–60 minutes at that stop. Questions focused on whether ongoing road and river construction would allow a detailed ground-level visit; staff said visible infrastructure — the pedestrian bridge and concrete steps — justify an on-site stop and the timing should be workable.
Members also raised site-specific concerns: Green Acres currently shows standing water because construction crews have stripped the playground footprint and parking limitations there remain an unresolved issue that could require significant funds to remedy. Niles said the new Green Acres playground is expected to be installed by the board’s next meeting and that staff is looking into parking options.
Why it matters: Main Street Landing is the newest major riverfront project and board members said an on-site tour would provide an opportunity for focused discussion with project managers about next steps, funding and public access.
What’s next: The board tentatively set the annual park tour for July 16 and asked staff to confirm stop logistics, timing and availability of project managers for presentations.
"I think Main Street Landing is our newest project and there's a lot of entities down there and I honestly think that we need to spend a lot of time down there," one board member said.
