Stanwood council approves community grants and park improvements, schedules events

Across regular meetings in 2024 the Stanwood City Council approved plans and funding requests for community-facing projects: new welcome signs, park improvements, Fun Fest support and a contract for a city shop lean-to replacement.
The council approved the welcome sign design and directed staff to submit a grant application to the Cedar County Community Foundation; subsequent minutes note a CCCF grant award of $6,000 toward the welcome signs. The council also recorded donations for Fun Fest and park improvements: $4,000 from Rural Recycling Grinding, LLC in June and $3,000 presented in November for park improvements.
On capital maintenance, the council approved a bid to replace the City Shop lean-to (Bulls Eye Builders LLC) at the April 16 special session and later approved repairs and quotes for park restroom ceiling work. Public Works Director Tim Schultz reported water tower cleaning delays and recommended summer smoke testing to identify illegal sump-pump connections into the sanitary sewer; the council discussed possible pickleball court installation and removal of worn horseshoe pits in the park.
Council also approved routine permits and licenses through the year (liquor and tobacco licenses for local businesses) and municipal procurement actions as recorded in meeting minutes.
Next steps: the clerk will finalize grant paperwork for the welcome signs, staff will schedule park repairs and the lean-to replacement contract will move to implementation with the selected contractor.
