Lifeguards report heavy rescue activity; June swell damaged pier pilings

Rob, speaking for lifeguards, told the Safety & Welfare Committee that since the April 28 meeting the lifeguard service recorded 343 rescues, about 6,736 preventions, 11,224 public-education contacts, 187 medical incidents and 3,077 enforcement incidents.
He described a series of large sets on June 9–12, including sets that reached 12 feet and another surge that occurred just after 4 a.m. on Tuesday that pushed 12-foot waves. That event damaged pier bracing and pilings; Rob estimated roughly $500,000 in damage and said U.S. tow boats assisted with removal of damaged pilings. The event prompted dozens of rescues; Rob said lifeguards recorded 41 rescues during the largest swell.
Rob described summer staffing plans (55 of 61 guards on duty for July 4) and listed upcoming public events including a beach showing of Top Gun on July 2, concerts July 3 and 4, and the Ocean Festival on July 18–19. He also noted lifeguard training and recruitment updates, including new hires and junior-guard sessions.
The committee did not vote on program changes; members praised the lifeguards' work and asked staff to continue beach-safety outreach.
