City and WHA board review local projects: Highland Avenue, bus garage, field irrigation and library green space

At a July 14 joint work session, Walker City Council members and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School Board representatives reviewed several local infrastructure items and possible joint uses.
City staff reported the Highland Avenue plan is moving forward on schedule. The group also received a brief overview of a possible Tower Avenue extension and bus garage construction; WHA representatives said new bus garage construction may be considered in their referendum planning, but no formal commitments or funding details were presented.
School representatives proposed using a well to irrigate school ball fields to reduce water costs. City staff said they would research the idea further but cautioned that using well water could conflict with the City's Wellhead Protection Plan and noted potential contamination concerns; staff also observed that some fields were built on land that had previously been used as a dump, which could complicate groundwater use.
The City and School District discussed shared use of the green space south of the library parking lot and north of the ball field. The library expressed interest in outdoor programming and the School suggested activities such as flag football. Attendees emphasized that any shared-use plan would exclude permanent fixtures or buildings unless separately approved.
No votes or formal project approvals were taken at the session; staff will research regulatory and environmental constraints and report back to the Council and School Board.
