Hatch Burrito Co. seeks permission to operate mobile food unit at Walker events; council raises competition concerns

Councilmembers said they support local businesses but raised concerns that allowing mobile food units could invite operators from surrounding areas and lead to multiple food trucks at events, potentially hurting existing brick-and-mortar restaurants. Councilmembers discussed the lack of a defined policy for which events and locations would permit mobile vendors.
The presenters said the City could consider limiting the number of mobile food units at any single event if the council approves the request. Administrator Hope Fairchild is preparing guidance and schedules for mobile food units as part of permitting paperwork already filed with the city.
The council did not take a final vote on a permanent policy during the Aug. 4 meeting; the matter remains under discussion and will be scheduled for follow-up as staff refines proposed permit conditions and caps.
