Walker, WHA school board discuss SRO contract, city seeks prompt renewal decision

Mayor Jerecho Worth called a joint work session of the Walker City Council and the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School Board on July 14, 2025, where the School Resource Officer (SRO) contract was a primary agenda item.
City staff reported there is one school year remaining on the existing SRO contract and asked the School Board to provide prompt feedback about whether it intends to renew the agreement for the 2026–2027 school year. The City said it is currently hiring a patrol officer who could backfill the SRO position if the district does not renew.
City staff noted that hiring additional officers carries added staffing, technology and infrastructure costs for the municipality. School Board representatives did not announce a decision at the session; the matter remains under consideration and the City requested a timely response so budgeting and staffing can be planned.
No formal motion or vote on the SRO contract was recorded at the work session. The City plans follow-up with the School Board to clarify whether the contract will be renewed and how any staffing changes would be handled.
