Council accepts $10,000 donation for Central Park playground, seeks additional funds to secure 50% federal discount

The Tracy City Council on Aug. 26 approved a $10,000 donation from Perry and Carol Fails toward a planned Central Park playground, and park leaders urged residents to help meet a short fundraising window to secure a federal 50% discount on play equipment.

Councilors voted to accept Resolution 2474, which formalizes the contribution. Mayor Corman read the donation details and thanked the donors, saying the gift moves the park committee closer to its goal. Park committee members and city staff reported the committee has raised substantial funds already and is targeting an additional approximately $30,000 by Sept. 29 to qualify for the 50% discount on the larger playground structure and associated pieces.

The park committee’s plan calls for purchasing at least one main structure and a supplemental 2–5 age unit. City staff described the equipment vendor’s timeline and said the committee must order soon to preserve the discount. The roughly $200,000 main structure would require a roughly $100,000 local match to secure the 50% off arrangement; the younger-children structure was estimated to cost about $40,000 (a smaller discount would apply if purchased separately). The park committee’s website (tracycentralpark.com) lists pieces and donation options.

Park volunteers and city staff will continue fundraising and public outreach over the next month. Councilors said the city will assist with publicity but that the equipment purchase and fundraising are led by the park committee. The council approved the resolution by roll call and then closed the regular meeting to go into a closed session.

The next procedural step is the vendor ordering decision, driven by whether the park committee reaches its fundraising target by the Sept. 29 deadline.
