Board reviews updated Title I family-engagement policy, considers ambassador program

Mrs. Hendrickson presented an updated Title I family-engagement policy that keeps year-to-year requirements but reorganizes and clarifies outreach, monitoring and family decision-making roles.
She told trustees the committee focused on four areas: increasing family voice and decision-making, creating multiple avenues to reach families, tailoring communications (including simplifying or removing the phrase "Title I" on outreach materials), and monitoring implementation with midyear and end-of-year checks. "Sometimes the title the phrase Title 1 could be a little intimidating," she said, describing a proposed family-engagement flyer that would instead use the label "family engagement advisory." She added the advisory group recommended providing clear flyers explaining meeting purposes and schedules to increase participation.
Board members asked about an "ambassador" program to involve parents. Mrs. Hendrickson said the district is exploring the idea and had discussed involving parents during recent administrative interviews. Trustees also asked about meeting times: presenters said morning meetings and virtual options increased attendance and that the district would continue to test times and checkpoints to respond to family preferences.
The presentation emphasized monitoring: the policy will include survey questions and a process to re-administer them in the fall to compare results. Mrs. Hendrickson said the team will document and report midyear and year-end findings to the board.
