Council discusses zoning changes to allow pools, sheds on adjoining vacant lots and parking adjustments

Union City Borough Council discussed proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance on July 9 that would allow certain accessory structures on vacant adjoining lots and directed the solicitor to draft formal ordinance language for future consideration.

Councilors revisited earlier changes to the Skill Games of Chance regulations (previously presented and approved) and discussed new proposals to permit above-ground pools on adjoining vacant lots. The council also discussed allowing sheds up to 144 square feet if placed on a gravel base, on skids or pillars, and removable; the proposal would remove side-yard setback requirements for an adjoining property line while retaining front-yard setbacks. Solicitor Tim Wachter will draft suggested ordinance language for review by council.

Separately, council considered amendments to the parking ordinance for Municipal Lot No. 2, including removing front-end parking and evaluating angled parking to increase spaces; the Street Supervisor was directed to calculate potential space counts and the solicitor will present a proposed amended ordinance for council review. Council also reviewed engineering cost and agreement considerations for the RT 97 project, noting an initial grant budget of $10,000 for engineering and inspection but advising the council that delays or unexpected site conditions could require additional monitoring costs.
