Union City moves forward with Broadband Ready Communities application

Union City Borough Council on July 9 authorized staff to proceed with the public meeting and resolution needed to apply for designation as a Broadband Ready Community and agreed to name the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) as the borough's Municipal Broadband Champion.
Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded a motion to proceed with the public meeting and resolution to pursue the Broadband Ready Communities designation; the motion carried unanimously. The council noted the designation could create opportunities for additional internet service providers to enter the borough and that current permitting requirements align with the program's recommendations.
The resolution allows the borough to participate in the Erie Area COG program and begin the public-notice process required by the designation. Council did not finalize a date for the public meeting at the session; staff will schedule the required public meeting as the next step.
