Sigourney council directs removal of dog after resident reports attack
Summary
After a resident reported being bitten on Oct. 15, the Sigourney City Council directed staff to notify dog owner Theresa Probst to remove the animal within 14 days; the council cited city ordinance on vicious-dog incidents.
Council member McLaughlin moved and Council member Clark seconded a motion directing staff to send a certified letter to Theresa Probst requiring removal of the dog within 14 days after the owner received notice. The action followed testimony from resident Avarie Smith that on Oct. 15 she and her dog were attacked and that she sustained bites to her left hand and right elbow. Minutes record paperwork identifying the attacking animal as a pit bull.
Code Enforcement Officer Doug Glandon told the council the city ordinance requires removal of a dog after a vicious-dog attack; Glandon also said the dog had been running at large. Mayor Jimmy Morlan noted the certified letter had been picked up by the owner but she did not respond at the meeting. The council voted unanimously to proceed with the removal notice and asked to be informed where the dog was taken once that information is provided to the code enforcement officer.
The minutes do not record a follow-up compliance deadline beyond the 14-day removal window, nor do they record whether the owner subsequently surrendered or relocated the animal.
