Mayor seeks new auditor after communication issues with 2024 audit

Mayor Lee Berenato told trustees on Jan. 26 that he has called and emailed the municipal auditor multiple times without receiving adequate responses and that communications about the 2024 audit have been unsatisfactory.
Berenato said the auditor contacted Chelsea with five or six minor requests and indicated the audit was almost done, but the mayor's unanswered messages prompted concern. The mayor said he is looking for a new auditor for the 2025 audit because initial audits often require extensive work to assemble municipal records. Town accountant Eliot Gidan told the mayor that first municipal audits typically take longer because auditors must build the town's accounting context from scratch.
Trustees did not take a formal vote to change auditors during the meeting; the mayor said Trustee Randal McDonald might have contacts to explore potential replacements.
