Silver Plume trustees author letter of support to Minnesota officials, cite townsanctuary status

The Silver Plume Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Jan. 26 to draft and mail a letter of support to the governor of Minnesota and the mayor of Minneapolis concerning recent local actions on immigration enforcement.
Trustee Martin Gitlin asked the board to authorize the letter, saying he "feels strongly" the trustees — not a citywide petition — should send it. Mayor Lee Berenato told trustees he would join Gitlin and the Town Clerk the following morning to draft the text. "Silver Plume is a Sanctuary City, and has been for some time," Berenato said.
The board discussed whether to also send a letter to the National Guard at Gitlin's suggestion, and then voted to approve drafting and mailing the letter. The motion was made by Trustee Mark Basham, seconded by Trustee Tammy Frey, and carried with all members present in favor.
The approval creates a procedural direction for Berenato and the Town Clerk to prepare the letter; trustees did not debate or adopt specific language during the meeting. The next step is the drafting meeting between the mayor and the clerk; the minutes show no public review of the draft before mailing was authorized.
The board's decision came during the public comment portion of the meeting; resident Sarah Walen told trustees she supported the move. The board did not record further public testimony or a formal public hearing on the topic.
