The Dickinson Township Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Sept. 3 to advertise an amendment to the township’s Parks and Recreation ordinance that would permit limited sale, service and consumption of beer and wine at Township-sponsored special events.
Elizabeth Grant, representing Friends of Barnitz Mill during the meeting’s agenda public-comment period, urged the board to adopt the change as a fundraising tool and to increase attendance at mill-related events, noting that Silver Spring Township and Dauphin County have similar provisions. Mike Shenk, co-chair of the Parks & Recreation Committee, also supported the amendment as a way to help park events.
Board members emphasized the need for public feedback before any final vote. Chairman Rob Kole asked Manager Jill Lovett to research how neighboring townships handle alcohol at events and for Parks & Recreation to continue providing updates. The board authorized advertising Ordinance 2025-01 — an administrative step that opens the proposal to public notice and comment — by unanimous vote. The motion was made by Vice Chairperson Jennifer DeGaetano, seconded by Supervisor Robert Line and recorded 3–0.
The advertisement does not enact the ordinance; it begins the statutory notice process. The board said they want to gather resident input and consider any conditions or permit requirements before a final vote.
