Wilmont council approves plow truck purchases, declares surplus property and OKs VFW raffle

In routine business on Dec. 11, the Wilmont City Council approved tires and plow blades for its new plow truck, declared surplus equipment (including a 1992 Ford plow and two liquid tanks), accepted a 2025 Fire Department budget showing a 7.5% increase, and authorized a VFW raffle for Feb. 9, 2025.
The Wilmont City Council handled several routine operational items at its Dec. 11 meeting, approving maintenance purchases, declaring surplus equipment, accepting the Fire Department’s budget proposal and authorizing charitable gambling for a VFW raffle.
Maintenance Supervisor Steve Joens reported the city is waiting on an estimate to repair a leaking boiler and presented quotes for new tires for the city’s new plow truck. The council approved selecting Heartland Tire of Worthington at a quoted price of $1,350 over a competing quote of $1,610 from Adrian Coop. The council also approved purchasing standard steel plow blades at $385.65 rather than more expensive carbide blades quoted at $1,195.65.
Council agreed staff should obtain and install a “City of Wilmont” sign on the new plow truck and authorized selling the sander and two liquid tanks removed from the 2010 Mack plow; those items were included in Resolution 2024-11 declaring surplus property.
The council accepted the Fire Department budget summary presented by Clerk Amber Bertrand; the minutes show the budget reflects about a 7.5% increase and the department will use a one-year budget so the fire chief (referred to as Logan in the minutes) can review it in detail. The council also approved the Fire Department’s fundraiser planned for the end of March and noted that the Toys for Tots effort went well.
On formal votes the council approved Resolution 2024-11 declaring surplus property (the 1992 Ford snow plow and the sander and two liquid tanks from the 2010 Mack plow) and Resolution 2024-12 authorizing charitable gambling for the VFW raffle on Feb. 9, 2025; both measures were recorded as carried unanimously.
The council also approved a motion to sell front windows from the community center, possibly to buyer Brian Remakel, and approved a clerk/IT arrangement for monthly computer backups to be performed by Mayor Gene Bertrand while he is off the council.
