Students from district high schools presented civic-action projects to the board as part of MPUSD’s pilot of the California State Seal of Civic Engagement. District staff said they estimate about 457 students are participating in civic-action projects across the district and that between 50 and 100 seniors may be eligible to earn the seal this year.
Staff described the seal as a diploma endorsement intended to recognize students who meet five state criteria, including completion of civic coursework and documented civic-action projects. Andrew and other staff outlined the five criteria and explained the district’s pilot program and teacher supports.
Student projects covered a range of issues: a laptop fund for graduating seniors who lack devices (Blake Skinner), a food‑access resource guide for tenants (Amelia Mateus Murphy), a teen civic-literacy social media project 'Your Civic Roadmap' to demystify local participation (Elora Chester), ocean-pollution cleanup and recycling-bin prototyping (Oliver Albright), school-safety and bullying-prevention surveys (Selena Rojas), and outreach to families about the Family Resource Center (Christopher Foliaki). Trustees praised the student work and asked staff to share project links with the board.
What’s next: Staff said projects are being collected and the district will share links and further details as seniors submit materials and as the program scales to additional grade levels.
