Wilmont council adopts amended fee schedule raising water rates, bans outside sewer dumping and approves building permit

Mayor Gene Bertrand convened the Wilmont City Council on July 9, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the Wilmont Community Center. The council approved the meeting agenda and routine consent items, including the June 11 minutes, employee time sheets and the treasurer’s report authorizing payment of bills.

On a motion by Councilmember Isaac Joens, seconded by Councilmember Josh Balster, the council approved Resolution 2024-05 amending the city’s fee schedule. The minutes record the only listed change as an increase in water rates to match an increase from Lincoln Pipestone Rural Water. The motion carried with all members present recorded as voting in favor.

Council also addressed concerns that pump-truck operators may be discharging extra sewer waste into Wilmont’s system. Although no council member said they had personally observed dumping, the council passed a motion (moved by Isaac Joens, seconded by Josh Balster) formally stating the city does not and will not allow anyone to dump sewer into the city sewer system or at the ponds.

The council approved a building permit to move a storage shed onto property owned by Tom Slater; the motion was made by Josh Balster and seconded by Isaac Joens and was recorded as carried.

Other business included approval of time sheets and direction to pay operating bills received after the meeting, including fire department bills. The council also publicly thanked the Wilmont Booster Club and volunteers for organizing the city’s 125th celebration. Clerk Amber Bertrand noted a request from Logan Neyens to add “Suite 1” to his Fuel on 4th address to complete dealer licensing; the council approved that administrative change.

The council adjourned with the next regular meeting set for Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
