Wilmont council reviews routine reports, considers community ice rink

The City of Wilmont council handled routine administrative business and discussed a proposal for a community ice rink at its Feb. 12, 2025 meeting.
Treasurer Amber Bertrand presented the financial report and stated there was "nothing out of the ordinary." Councilmember Isaac Joens moved to accept the report and to pay remaining and post-meeting operating bills, including fire department invoices; Councilmember Alicia Entinger seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The council also approved prior meeting minutes and time sheets without recorded objection.
Deputy Morke of the Nobles County Sheriff's office attended and followed up on a report of a vehicle that had not moved during a recent snowstorm; the deputy identified the owner and the owner said they would move the vehicle. Maintenance worker Steve Joens reported tree trimming and requested approval to attend a two-day water/wastewater licensing class in Pipestone in May; the council approved his attendance.
During the fire department report, Clerk Amber Bertrand said she had consulted with insurance contact Wade, who recommended the department keep an equipment inventory; Amber will work with Logan on that. Mayor Josh Balster and Jordan have been requesting township donations toward a new truck.
Councilmember Alicia Entinger raised a suggestion to install an ice rink at the park or ballfield. Councilmember Isaac Joens cautioned that rink boards and a liner would be required to maintain ice quality and contain water; Entinger said she would present the idea to the Booster Club to see if they would consider funding the necessary equipment. The council indicated it would not object to water usage for the rink and would revisit the matter should the Booster Club pursue it.
Old-business follow-up: maintenance will contact Brian about whether he wants to buy previously removed windows or whether the city can recover them. The council adjourned and set its next meeting for Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
