Wilmont council approves maintenance actions; fire department installs new air system and seeks pump truck

City maintenance and public safety issues featured at the Sept. 11 Wilmont council meeting, where maintenance lead and volunteer firefighter Steve Joens updated the council on equipment, facility upkeep and safety needs.

Joens reported he found a compatible radiator for the plow truck and recommended sending formal letters to property owners with galvanized pipes and to those with illegal hookups; the council supported pursuing letters. He advised converting Community Center lighting to LED because many lights are burning out; the council authorized the LED switch. Joens also said ponds have been pumped once, a second pumping is planned, and Justin will be scheduled to install a valve when pond levels are low. He recommended planning crack-sealing for streets next spring or summer and suggested borrowing or renting county equipment to reduce costs.

On public safety, Joens told the council the fire department’s new air compressor is installed and new air tanks are in service, and volunteers are training on the equipment. He said the department remains in search of a replacement pump truck because the tank on the old truck is beginning to rust through.

The council approved the maintenance and fire department reports unanimously and directed staff to proceed with the recommended administrative and equipment follow-ups.

What’s next The council asked staff to begin the LED conversion at the Community Center, to send notification letters regarding galvanized pipes and illegal hookups, and the fire department will continue its search for a replacement pump truck.
