East Penn board approves curriculum updates; staff to report back on world-language pilot

The East Penn School Board approved curriculum items on its agenda and discussed an introductory world-language pilot the administration plans to run next year. Board member Miss Price said she was impressed by the variety of authors in the ELA resources and asked about representation of diverse authors across required and optional lists.
"I did enjoy reading all the curriculum resources and I was really impressed with the variety of authors and the diverse authors under the ELA section," Miss Price said during the meeting.
Staff explained that Level 1 curriculum lists are produced by curriculum committees composed of teachers, building leaders and the office of teaching and learning; librarians contribute to library collections but community members are not typically part of the Level 1 writing process. The district explained required readings are intended to provide grade-level consistency, while optional resources give teachers and students additional choice.
On the world-language pilot, Mr. Kelly asked whether the board needed to approve the pilot. Administration said the pilot will be run as a district program and does not require board approval; the district will notify the board and community and will report results. Staff described selection as based on multiple data points and said measures of success will include course grades, assessments and student feedback. The district committed to reporting outcomes and recommendations to the board midyear or in early spring when program-of-study decisions are considered.
The board completed roll-call votes on the curriculum items that were on the agenda and approved them.
