Council appoints Stephanie Renee Cockrell as Urbana Ward 5 alderperson

The Urbana City Council on Monday confirmed Mayor Williams’s appointment of Stephanie Renee Cockrell to the vacant Ward 5 seat, filling the remainder of the term through April 6, 2027.
Councilmember Quisenberry moved the appointment; the nomination was seconded and the council approved it on a unanimous voice and roll-call vote. Cockrell was sworn in at the meeting and said she was ready to “listen, to learn, to show up” and to represent Ward 5 residents.
The meeting also approved several mayoral appointments and reappointments to local boards and commissions, including traffic and human-rights commissions and reappointments to the Urbana Free Library board, the Sustainability Advisory Commission and the Arts and Culture Commission.
Cockrell’s swearing-in was procedural and took place after the council extended the meeting to complete its agenda; councilmembers welcomed her and noted expectations for collaboration and public service.
