Milton names athletic director Jeff Spivey interim varsity football coach after late resignation

The School District of Milton placed activities and athletic director Jeff Spivey in the interim head football coach role after a late resignation for the position, the district told the board.

Mr. Bellhorn presented a memorandum explaining the unusual step of an administrator serving as head coach, saying the district evaluated interim candidates and concluded Jeff Spivey was best positioned to lead while preserving continuity for athletes. Administrators said they have supports in place for Spivey to balance duties as activities director and coach, that many assistant coaches will take on expanded responsibilities, and that the position will be posted for a permanent hire after the season.

Board members asked whether Spivey had a full complement of assistant coaches and whether his family had approved the extra commitment; district staff said most assistant positions are filled and that Carrie (safety coordinator) had 'given her blessing' for the arrangement. Presenters noted that Spivey has prior head-coaching experience and has coached at the varsity level previously.

The staffing report was presented as part of the consent/action items. Rick moved to approve the staffing report, John seconded, Tracy abstained; the motion carried.

The district said it will continue recruiting for permanent coaches and provide supports to ensure practices and other activities are covered while Spivey balances administrative responsibilities.
