Councilor VanDeest asks for compost-site survey, suggests training area for Fire Department

Councilor VanDeest asked the Lafayette City Council on March 24, 2026 to have a property survey completed after observing what he described as a potential encroachment by the neighbor south of the municipal compost site. VanDeest said the survey would cost approximately $1,900.
VanDeest also said the Fire Department needs a permanent training area and proposed using part of the compost site for trainings instead of repeatedly seeking permission from private property owners. Interim City Clerk Allan Fox said staff need to determine how much space the department requires and that ground work will be necessary to prepare the site.
Council discussion identified sections of land the city has confirmed as city property: the section directly east of the Wastewater Treatment Facility along State Hwy. 15, and a triangular parcel at the southeast corner of 9th Street and CSHA 1. VanDeest asked whether the city would move the salt shed to the compost site and possibly sell the small parcel where the salt shed currently sits; the council noted Nicollet County owns property north of the salt shed, and members discussed whether the city should continue mowing and maintaining that area.
No formal motion to fund a survey or to relocate the salt shed was taken during the workshop; VanDeest’s proposal was recorded as a topic for staff follow-up.
