City staff presented recent property and equipment updates at the May 11 Lafayette council meeting and the council approved a small stipend for Memorial Park maintenance.
A survey at the wastewater treatment facility/compost site was completed and council members discussed options for declaring property as excess and selling it. The salt shed parcel and a triangular parcel south of the C-store (inside city limits; adjoining property outside city limits) were discussed; staff outlined potential sale terms and valuation considerations.
Staff reported a jetter was sold for $2,000. A John Deere item failed to make the prior auction deadline and will be listed in the July auction. Councilor Logan VanDeest noted that modern MS4 stormwater minimums do not require a dedicated salt shed and that earlier regulations prompted the shed's construction; current MS4 minimums could be met with a hard surface and tarp coverage.
The American Legion requested a $600 stipend to help offset costs to maintain Memorial Park. Councilor Tom Polich moved to authorize the stipend; Councilor Logan VanDeest seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. A separate proposal to contract quarterly cleaning for the community center was discussed but tabled pending a review of insurance, fee schedule and an independent contractor option.
What happens next: Staff will compile property-sale options and bring detailed terms and timing back to a future council meeting; the John Deere item will be listed at the July auction.
