Lafayette council reviews civic duties, backs Park & Recreation plan to replace ballpark fencing

Lafayette’s City Council met in workshop Jan. 29 and reviewed updated civic duties language while discussing Park & Recreation priorities, including a volunteer- and donation-backed plan to replace ballpark fencing.
Mayor Curt Tauber opened the meeting and Councilors reviewed which duties could be removed or combined and agreed to add a Park & Recreation liaison. City Clerk Corina Reinhart was asked to draft an updated civic-duties document for Council review; the revised language will be placed on the agenda at the next regular meeting for formal consideration.
Park & Recreation representatives told the Council they will solicit at least two contractor bids and run a fundraising effort for replacement fencing at the municipal ballpark. The group said funds raised would be transferred to the City so the city can pay contractors because the park is City property. Utilities Superintendent Allan Fox was named as the City’s point of contact for contractors and will work with Park & Recreation on installation issues. Councilors also agreed the City would contribute any remaining funds from the city’s 125th Celebration account; Clerk Reinhart will confirm the available amount.
Officials noted an existing $1,000 donation from the Gibbon Area Lions and an anonymous donation already designated in the General Fund for the project. Council members and Park & Recreation volunteers offered to remove the old fencing; the disposition of the old fencing will be an agenda item at the next regular Council meeting.
Council and Park & Recreation also agreed to keep the current agreement assigning responsibilities for park operations. Park & Recreation reported that Hockey Day Lafayette was successful and suggested regularly scheduled open hours for the warming house; the warming-house schedule will be added to the next regular meeting agenda. Park & Recreation announced a Meat BINGO for Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, and a board meeting on Sunday, March 1, 2026, for which two Councilors are expected to attend.
The workshop produced direction to staff and Park & Recreation rather than formal votes; those items will return to the Council for formal action or ordinance language where required.
