Council members agreed that variances should carry minimum requirements while conditional-use and rezoning requests should be subject to stricter review and notification standards. Mayor Tauber emphasized the need for clarified language so staff and applicants have a predictable process.
The council also directed staff to move forward with drafting a subdivision ordinance. Mayor Tauber said the city needs the ordinance framework, and members reviewed information already provided to guide development and eventual adoption.
On a separate land-use matter, the council discussed a potential wind-turbine ordinance. Mayor Tauber introduced the topic and council members said siting a turbine safely inside Lafayette’s city limits would be difficult. Members asked staff to investigate safety, siting and regulatory implications before drafting formal rules.
No formal votes or ordinance adoptions occurred at the workshop; officials directed staff to prepare draft language and return to the council for further review at a future meeting.
