Silver Plume to move Silver Street dumpster and limit access amid repeated dumping

After repeated nonresidential dumping at the Silver Street dumpster, the Silver Plume Board of Trustees agreed April 13 to relocate and restrict access to the bin intended for residents on Silver, Willis and Jefferson streets.
Mayor Lee Berenato described the problem: “That dumpster is really for the use of the houses on Silver St./Willis St./Jefferson St., as those residents do not have winter service,” and said construction and other trash has been dumped instead. The Board discussed moving the dumpster to Janine and Tim’s lot on Willis Street with a combo lock and issuing the code only to eligible households; if permission is not given, town property at the east end of Willis was proposed as an alternative.
Trustees debated enforcement options including signage, cameras, and a written maintenance agreement with Timberline (the hauler). Trustee Martin Gitlin warned that locked dumpsters can still be misused, while Trustee Tammy Frey suggested cameras or clear signage. The Board also discussed service frequency differences between summer and winter and the possibility that some residents would prefer paying for individual service rather than shared dumpsters if problems persist.
Berenato said the town will take steps this summer to address enforcement and maintenance and will seek a larger dumpster or a written agreement with Timberline if needed.
